12 Acoustic Enclosures & Tanks for Swedish Data Centre Generators

A long-standing client of ours, a leading global supplier of power generation systems, secured a significant contract to supply 12 Cummins 3000 kVA emergency standby diesel generator systems, with a total capacity of 36 MVA, to a hyperscale data centre in Sweden.

They needed a manufacturer capable of producing 12 bespoke acoustic enclosures attenuated to 80 dB(A) at 1 metre, and 12 16,000 litre belly tanks compliant with Swedish MSBFS regulations.

Our solution, involving advanced design, manufacturing, and fit-out services, ensured timely delivery, regulatory compliance, and consistent quality across all 12 units. The result was a streamlined project with reliable and specification-compliant emergency power systems.

Our client faced a substantial challenge: they needed their 12 Cummins C3000D5 standby diesel generators acoustically packaging, and supplying alongside a total of 192,000 litres of bulk fuel storage. They required:

  • 12 bespoke acoustic enclosures attenuated to a noise level of 80 dB(A) at 1 metre.
  • A 16,000 litre belly tank compliant with Swedish MSBFS regulations for each of the 12 generator units.
  • A single-source supplier capable of handling design, manufacturing, and fit-out to ensure quality and consistency.

Given the hyperscale nature of the data centre our client was supplying, any failure in the emergency power system could have catastrophic consequences. Therefore, the highest standards of quality and compliance were rightfully required.

To address these challenges effectively, our approach included several key steps:

Design

Our in-house design engineering team used the latest 3D design software to create tailored enclosures and tanks. This ensured precision and adherence to both our client's specifications and Swedish regulatory requirements.

Manufacturing

Our experienced fabricators and painters then brought these designs to life, manufacturing and painting all 12 enclosures and tanks. Each enclosure featured:

  • Motorised inlet dampers.
  • Internal fuel day tanks.
  • LV switchgear and LV cabling.
  • Duty/standby pumps and double-skinned internal fuel pipework with vacuum leak detection.
  • Auxiliary equipment, including small light and power.

Fit-Out and Quality Control

Following manufacture and painting of the enclosures, our fit-out team then installed the Cummins C3000D5 standby diesel generators inside the enclosures. The 16,000 litre belly tanks were inspected and approved by TUV to ensure compliance with Swedish MSBFS regulations. Throughout the project, our quality control and project management teams maintained rigorous standards, ensuring high quality and on-time delivery.

Dispatch and Logistical Coordination

All units were manufactured and packaged, both mechanically and electrically, at our Pontefract, UK facility. We coordinated the dispatches to guarantee that all 12 packaged generators and fuel tanks arrived in Sweden according to the project timeline.

Our full design-to-dispatch solution yielded several measurable results for our client:

  • Timely Delivery and Installation: Our client was able to successfully deliver and install all 12 packaged standby generators and fuel tanks on-site within the project’s timeline.
  • Regulatory Compliance: The enclosures and tanks met all necessary safety and environmental standards, ensuring compliance with strict site and Swedish MSBFS regulations.
  • Consistent Quality: By manufacturing all aspects of the overall solutions in-house, we guaranteed consistent quality across all units, crucial for the emergency power system's overall performance and reliability.
  • Streamlined Project Management: Our client benefited from simplified project management, coordinating with a single supplier rather than multiple vendors.
  • Effective Quality Control: Their single-source approach allowed for more effective quality control, reducing the risk of inconsistencies or defects.
  • Noise Compliance: The acoustic treatment of the enclosures achieved the required noise levels of 80 dB(A) at 1 metre.

Our comprehensive solution provided our client with reliable, regulatory-compliant, and high-quality emergency power systems, meeting all technical and logistical challenges.

Our partnership with the leading power generation supplier showcases the importance of technical expertise, advanced design, and comprehensive project management in delivering complex solutions. By providing a complete, single-source solution, we simplified their supply chain, ensured regulatory compliance, and delivered consistent quality, significantly benefitting our client.

Looking forward, our ongoing collaboration aims to further refine and optimise our client’s power generation solutions, leveraging cutting-edge technology and industry best practices.
