AVK, one of Europe’s largest power solution providers for data centres, faced the complex challenge of supplying 24 MTU 2750 kVA emergency standby diesel generator systems to a hyperscale data centre in Italy, in 4 phases of 6 units each.

They required an acoustic enclosure manufacturer with the capabilities and capacity to design, manufacture, and fully fit-out a bespoke acoustic enclosure for each of the 24 generator sets. The enclosures needed to meet strict noise level requirements of 85 dB(A) at 1 metre, whilst also adhering to tight deadlines and stringent quality standards.

The Situation

AVK was contracted to deliver 24 MTU 2750 kVA emergency standby generator systems in 4 phases of 6 units each to a hyperscale data centre in Italy. These generators needed to be housed in bespoke acoustic enclosures attenuated to a stringent noise level of 85 dB(A) at 1 metre. Each enclosure also had to accommodate internal auxiliary equipment, including fuel day tanks, lube oil tanks, control link boxes, and lighting systems.

Key challenges included developing custom designs that adhered not only to the project's rigorous technical specifications, but also to demanding site regulations. Additionally, the first phase required an expedited turnaround, with the first 6 enclosures needing complete mechanical and electrical fit-out within just 3 days. Consistent quality and on-schedule delivery across all 24 units were non-negotiable for this high-stakes project, which demanded meticulous project management and quality assurance.

Our Solution

ADE employed a comprehensive approach to address both AVK’s and the end client’s requirements, ensuring the successful execution of each phase of the overall project.

Design & Engineering

Our in-house engineering team designed the bespoke acoustic solutions using the latest 3D design software, ensuring complete accuracy and compliance with the specification. The enclosure spec was precisely tailored for the MTU DS2750 generator set to meet noise reduction requirements.

Fabrication & Paint

Our experienced team of fabricators and painters then manufactured and painted the enclosures, each measuring 13.9 metres in length, 2.9 metres in width, and 3.4 metres in height. Alongside the enclosures, our teams also manufactured and painted 24 1,000 litre fuel day tanks to meet the project specification.

Full Mechanical & Electrical Fit-Out

Our mechanical and electrical fit-out teams installed the MTU generators into the enclosures, alongside the fuel day tanks with duty / standby fuel pumps, load cable internal link boxes, lube oil tanks, external control link boxes, other auxiliary equipment, and small light and power. To meet the tight deadline for the first 6 units, our fit-out teams worked in 24 hour shifts, successfully completing the units to meet AVK’s timeline. Rigorous quality control was conducted at each stage throughout to ensure adherence to all the required safety and environmental standards.

Project Management

From design through to dispatch, our project management and quality assurance teams ensured seamless execution, minimising risks and delivering consistent results. As a single-source supplier for all the enclosures for this project, ADE reduced AVK’s supply chain complexity and the need to coordinate between multiple vendors to ensure product quality and consistency.
