What is a Load Bank Test?

The fundamental function of any diesel generator system is to provide reliable power when needed, ensuring that if mains power is interrupted or unavailable, you have it covered with a dependable primary or backup power source.

An essential element of genset maintenance is having your generator load tested at regular intervals, ensuring that when you flick the switch, you have the power. We strongly recommend that your diesel generator be fully load tested at least once a year. This minimal amount of downtime will ensure a fully reliable and operational power source that is able to operate at its maximum rated load, ready for when you need it most.

What's Included in a Load Bank Test?

Every generator purchased from ADE has the additional option of a resistive load bank test prior to dispatch. The test is run on step loads with increasing intervals until finally operating on full standby load. We provide our customers with a load bank report that contains comprehensive data generated by the load bank software. The information will demonstrate the health of the generator and confirm its maximum load capacity.

The information recorded includes:

How Does a Load Bank Test Work?

A load bank is a piece of equipment that is used to simulate electrical loads in order to test & verify power sources such as generator sets & UPS systems.

Your generator will be disconnected from its usual load and connected to the load bank where various artificial loads will be placed onto the generator. Under the supervision of our qualified engineer(s), the load is applied in incremental kW load steps until the generator is running at 110% of its prime power rating.

As the load is increased, data is recorded on the engine's critical performance, indicating its ability to handle the load step and to continue functioning at that output for a sustained period of time.

These tests confirm that the fundamental components of your diesel generator set are in peak operating condition, ready for use.

Diesel Generator Wet Stacking

When diesel engines are not used often or only run on light loads (less than 50% of its prime rating), they become more susceptible to unburned fuel and soot building up in the exhaust, this is known as "wet-stacking".

When wet-stacking occurs: the performance and efficiency of your generator will suffer, the unit will become vulnerable to damage, be a potential fire hazard, and could possibly even lead to complete failure. During our load bank tests, the generator is run at full power and therefore, full temperature, causing any wet-stacking buildups to be burnt off and nipping the issue in the bud before further problems occur.

Benefits of Load Bank Testing

There are many positives as to why your diesel generator should undergo a load bank test on an annual basis:

  • Provides peace of mind that your genset will work properly when you need it
  • Confirms that the engine cooling system will perform as expected while under load
  • Confirms the genset's capabilities
  • Helps to diagnose issues that when discovered early, can be significantly less expensive to rectify, preventing more major issues down the line
  • Helps to prevent wet-stacking and cleans out unwanted sooty carbon deposits

For total peace of mind, our servicing department can keep track of when your generator is due for its next service and load bank and with a vast range of parts & spares available, we can provide a complete maintenance package including load testing as part of the service contract. Additional liquid analysis can provide further prior warnings of hidden problems before they become major mechanical failures.
